English Fernando Augusto Coimbra was born in Lisbon on the 6 of October of 1956. He studied archaeology and graduated at Oporto University, begining, after that, to participate in conferences in Portugal and Spain. He published several articles in archaeological magazines, presented several lectures and made excavations mainly in Iron Age villages with later roman occupation. He begun to be interested in Rock Art when he participated at the IFRAO Conference at Torino, in 1995, where he presented a paper. In 1997 he begun to work at the Museum of Conimbriga, an important Roman City from Portugal, and in the year 2000 he was invited to be the Sub-Director of the Conimbriga’s Centre of Education of Teachers. In October of 2001 he presented a paper, invited by Prof. Umberto Sansoni, in a conference about rock art, at Verbania, by Lago Maggiore, and after that he spent four days visiting Valcamonica with members of the Dipartimento Valcamonica del Centro Camuno di Studi Preistorici.
Nowadays he’s preparing his PhD which theme is – The Swastika in Portugal and Galicia, since Bronze Age till the end of the West Roman Empire. He has a project for the organization of an international congress about iconographic and symbolic archaeology and has the collaboration of researchers from several countries. After presenting the thesis, he’s thinking on studying the filiform post palaeolithic rock art from the North and the Centre of Portugal. He’s married and has a son with almost three years and the wife is pregnant again.
Portoghese Fernando Augusto Coimbra nasceu em Lisboa a 6 de Outubro de 1956. Estudou Arqueologia na Universidade do Porto, onde se licenciou, começando então a participar em congressos em Portugal e Espanha. Publicou diversos artigos em revistas arqueológicas, fez conferências e realizou escavações principalmente em povoados da Idade do Ferro, com posterior ocupação romana. Começou a interessar-se por Arte Rupestre quando participou com comunicação no NEWS – 95 International Rock Art Congress, em Turim. Em 1997 começou a trabalhar no Museu de Conimbriga, uma importante cidade romana de Portugal, e no ano 2000 foi convidado para Director Regional do Centro de Formação de Professores de Conimbriga. Em Outubro de 2001, apresentou uma comunicação, a convite do Prof. Umberto Sansoni, num congresso sobre Arte Rupestre Esquemática realizado em Verbania, junto ao Lago Maggiore. Após este evento passou quatro dias em visita a Valcamonica acompanhado por elementos do Dipartimento Valcamonica del Centro Camuno di Studi Preistorici.
Actualmente está a preparar a sua Tese de Doutoramento, cujo tema é – A suástica em Portugal e na Galiza desde a Idade do Bronze ao fim do Período Romano. Tem um projecto de organização de um congresso internacional de Arqueologia Iconográfica e Simbólica e conta com o interesse e colaboração de investigadores de diversos países. Após o Doutoramento pensa estudar a Arte Rupestre filiforme Pós-Paleolítica no Centro e Norte de Portugal. È casado e tem um filho com quase três anos, estando a mulher novamente grávida.
